Butanol (butyl alcohol) - colourless, slightly oily liquid with characteristic smell of fusel oil (very much and very strongly "fake vodka"). Restrictedly we will dissolve in usual water.
It is used as solvent for paints, varnishes and drying oils, natural and synthetic resins, rubbers, vegetable oils, paints and alkaloids. It plays role of intermediate link in production of pharmaceuticals and chemicals, and is used in the industries making imitation leather, textiles, unbreakable glass, rubber adhesive, shellac, raincoats, photographic films and spirits. Secondary butanol is also used as solvent and chemical intermediate product; it is part of brake fluids, industrial detergents, polishes, means for removal of paint, agents for flotation of ore, fruit essential oils, spirits, dyes. Isobutanol is solvent of surface coatings and glues; it is part of varnishes, means for removal of paint, spirits, cleaners and hydraulic liquid. Tert - butanol is used for elimination of water from different materials. It is used as solvent in production of drugs, spirits and aromatic substances, and also as chemical intermediate product. It also is part of industrial detergents, is applied to denaturation of ethyl alcohol and added to gasoline for increase of its octane value.
