Grinding skin

The emery paper (skin) is an abrasive material which is intended for grinding and elimination of roughnesses/teeth from a surface.

Today the emery paper is issued with granularity from 12 to 4000.

Granularity (R) is quantity of abrasive particles on 1 square inch of a skin. Than less this number, especially rough (grains are larger) an emery paper.

Conditionally it can be divided into 3 groups:

• Coarse - grained (12 - 80). It is most often applied to remove various varnishes and paints from a surface, that is it is applied to preprocessing. After such rough polishing usually there are scratches which need to be processed thinner emery paper.
• Emery paper of average granularity (80 - 160). It is usually used after coarse - grained for smoothing and alignment of a wooden surface. Such paper leaves few marks and is used for intermediate processing of material.
• Fine - grained (160 - 4000). The fine - grained emery paper allows to remove completely all roughnesses and scratches from a tree surface. It is used as finishing processing, just before painting.

Basis of an emery paper

• Paper basis. The emery paper on a paper basis is the cheapest, is capable to maintain big mechanical loadings and can be processed by water - repellent substance. It is possible to apply on such basis even the smallest fractions of grinding material, however its wear resistance leaves much to be desired.
• Fabric basis. The emery paper on a fabric basis possesses good wear resistance and can become impregnated special with pitches for protection against moisture. Also it possesses good elasticity and threading on a gap.
