Zhiguli VAZ-2101 — the Soviet rear wheel drive car of a small class with a body like sedan. The first model produced at the Volga automobile plant. On the VAZ-2101 base the so-called "classical" family of cars VAZ which was on the conveyor till September 17, 2012 was created. For release of this model in May, 1972 the Volga automobile plant was handed the International award "Gold Mercury". In 2000 VAZ-2101 was called the best domestic car of the 20th century by results of the All-Russian survey conducted by the Za Rulyom magazine. For all the time of production (from 1970 to 1988) the Volga automobile plant released 4,85 million VAZ-2101 cars of all modifications with a body a sedan.
