Mahogany, Africa [Khaya]
Wood veneer from wood of mahogany of African [Khaya].
Botanical name: Khaya, spp.
Other names: acajou (France), khaya mahogani (Germany), african mahogani (Great Britain). The name is African red, or makhogoniyevy, the tree (African mahogany) covers all types of Khaya though their wood can differ on properties, especially on density. The prevailing mass of the shipped forest products belongs to breeds To. ivorensis and To. anthotheca, with moderately light, pale red or moderately red wood which in the commercial relation is associated with the name African red, makhogoniyevy, tree. The East African breed To. nyasica in general is similar to the first two.
Distribution. Grows in coastal rainfall forests of the Western Africa from Ivory Coast to Cameroon and Gabon, including the territory of Ghana and Nigeria in areas with smaller amount of precipitation. Wood. The kernel in freshly-cut state is distinct pink. When drying it becomes from light pinkish-brown to dense reddish. Fibers usually confused and cross-grained. The texture is larger, than at wood of the American breeds of redwood. All breeds of Mahogany belong to moderately resistant.
Technology properties. Lighter wood is processed easier, heavier is slightly more difficult. Wood of both versions owing to curly grain of fibers can be lifted up on radial sections. This defect is partially eliminated by reduction of corners, cutting to 15 °. Wood of all breeds well sticks together and usually not bad accepts nails. It is well polished, gives quality finishing.
Application. Timber from wood of the African mahogany (Kaya) is widely used in furniture production, for internal decorative finishing of rooms, as in the form of whole wood, and veneer method by interline interval, for high-quality mill work (ladders, panels), covering of floors in premises, in shipbuilding (covering, finishing of cabins, hand-rail, handrail).
