Lime not extinguished, calcium oxide Calcium oxide (the calcium oxide, not extinguished lime or "kipelka", "kirabit") — white crystal substance, the CaO connection. The main volumes are used in construction as limy cement — when mixing with water, oxide of calcium passes into hydroxide which further, absorbing carbon dioxide from air, strongly hardens, turning into a calcium carbonate. However now limy cement at construction of houses is tried not to be applied as the received structures possess ability to absorb and accumulate dampness.
Use of limy cement at a laying of furnaces is categorically inadmissible — because of thermal decomposition and allocation in air of suffocating carbon dioxide.
Also finds some application as available and inexpensive fire - resistant material — melted oxide of calcium has some resistance to water influence that allows to use it as an ogneupor where use of more expensive materials is inexpedient.
In small amounts calcium oxide is also used in laboratory practice for drainage of substances which do not react with it.
