Random access memory is a part of the general memory of the laptop which is the fast memory device of not really large volume, directly connected with the processor. It is intended for reading, processing and short storage of the carried-out programs. After switching off of the laptop, everything that was stored by random access memory, vanishes.

In the majority of laptops one of versions of DIMM modules which is called SO-DIMM is used. This module by the sizes is less than ordinary computer DIMM module.

In laptops with the Pentium II processor and with a frequency of processor of 366 MHz there was random access memory with a frequency of tire of 66 MHz. This type of memory is designated as PC 66. The more tire frequency, the is higher laptop productivity in general.

Modern laptops which are issued on the basis of the Pentium IV and Centrino Mobile processor suit the following types of random access memory: PC 2100 (DDR 266), with a frequency of 133 MHz, PC 2700 (DDR 333), with a frequency of 167 MHz.

And on the most ultramodern models of laptops random access memory of DDR 2 is used (with a frequency of 266, 333 and 400 MHz).

Addition of random access memory considerably increases productivity and speed of the laptop, and also laptop operating time from the battery since increase in random access memory reduces use of the hard drive on which the file of pumping is located. Frequent use of the file of pumping increases disk activity and reduces speed of the hard drive on an equal basis with the increased energy consumption. Addition of random access memory will allow to work without addressing the file of pumping that increases laptop productivity in general, and also increases operating time from the battery.

Today the recommended minimum volume of random access memory is 128 MB, and the volume suitable for normal trouble-free operation on the computer - 1 GB and more. To those users who work with applications for processing of images and video, we recommend to use random access memory with a capacity of 4 Gbytes and above. But the majority of old laptops will not support such large volume of memory therefore at their modernization it is necessary to establish memory of the greatest possible volume.
