Production
Nessler's reagent as follows is made: in KI aqueous solution HgCl2 saturated solution in the quantity sufficient for formation of red deposit is flowed, after that the firm GAME is added to components, and small amount of HgCl2 saturated solution is entered into the turned - out solution. After that solution is diluted with water and some time is defended. The received transparent liquid is also Nessler's reagent. If instead of HgI2 HgCl2 is used, the reactant turns out more sensitive.
Appearance
Nessler's reagent (K2HgI4 • KOH or K2HgI4 • NaOH) - represents aqueous caustic solution of dihydrate of tetraiodomerkurat (II) potassium. Externally it is the liquid of pale yellow color decaying under the influence of light.
Application
Nessler's reagent is widely applied in laboratory practice to photometric definition and detection of NH3 at 436 nanometers (el 2.106). Besides, ability of Nessler's reagent to form metal mercury causes its use for detection of aldehydes and alcohols, and also identifications of such substances as hydroxyamino acids in thin and paper chromatography.

Storage
Nessler's reagent has to be stored in the cold place protected from hit of direct daylight, packed into dark stoppered bottles. The expiration date of reactant makes three years.
