Description
Petroleum ether — the mix of light aliphatic hydrocarbons (pentanes and hexanes) received from associated petroleum gases and light distillates of oil. Colorless liquid with t. kip. , 40 — 70 °C (easy) and 70 — 100 °C (heavy), and with density of 0,650 — 0,695 g/cm3. Petroleum ether — solvent of fats, oils, pitches, etc. Fuel for petrol lighters and catalytic hot - water bottles. It is often used as eluent (solvent) in solution chromatography. The name of substance is traditional, but not nomenclature as on chemical composition petroleum ether has no relation neither to simple, nor to esters. Qualification of reactant cannot be appropriated to also petroleum ether, in it there is no main component for rationing.
