Description
Chemical formula: KBr
Synonym: Potassium bromide, potassium bromide, potassium salt of bromovodorodny acid
International name: POTASSIUM BROMIDE
CAS No: 7758 - 02 - 3
Qualification: Imp. "хч", GOST 4160 - 74
Appearance: colourless crystals, in the mass of white color
Potassium bromide (Potassium bromide, potassium salt of bromovodorodny acid) - colourless crystal substance, KBr. Potassium bromide is typical ionic salt. At dissolution in water is exposed to full dissociation, at the same time is not exposed to hydrolysis as salt is formed by the strong basis (potassium hydroxide) and strong acid (bromovodorodny acid).
Receiving
• For industrial needs potassium bromide (Potassium bromide) is received by means of interaction of potassium carbonate with the mixed ferrous bromide (II, III) by Fe3Br8:
4K2CO3 + Fe3Br8 → 8KBr + Fe3O4 + 4CO2
• In vitro it is possible to receive potassium bromide, for example, by means of interaction of potassium hydroxide, bromine and ammonia:
6KOH + 3Br2 + 3NH3 → 6KBr + 6H2O + N2 ↑
Application
Potassium bromide (Potassium bromide, potassium salt of bromovodorodny acid) is widely used
• in industrial chemistry,
• as source bromide ions for receiving silver bromide which is used for production photo and films,
• in medicine and pharmaceutics,
• as prefix for the IK - spectrophotometer for studying of ranges of liquid substances, potassium bromide does not absorb IK - radiation in rather wide interval of lengths of waves (from 0,25 microns to 25 microns) that allows to use it for these purposes
• as the thermal stabilizer in production of nylon, chemical in oil production, etc.
