Description
Furfuryl alcohol (from armor. furfur — bran) — monoatomic alcohol, derivative furan. Represents poisonous, mobile, transparent, sometimes yellowish (to dark brown), the liquid over time reddening on air.
Furfuryl alcohol - colorless or light yellow liquid, with a density of 1,13 g/cm ³. It is easily dissolved in the majority of polar organic solvents. Spsoben to be dissolved in water, forming unstable connections.
Index of refraction of furfuryl alcohol 1,485 - 1,488; temperature of ignition is 490 °C.
Reacts characteristic of alcohols. The furan ring of furfuryl alcohol possesses fragrance therefore it can react, characteristic of benzaldehyde.
When heating in the presence of strong acids oxygen of furan ring attaches proton, fragrance collapses owing to what furfural will be polymerized (resinifies), forming furan resins.
At contact with strong inorganic acids, alkalis and Lewis acids furfuryl alcohol is capable to explosive polymerization.
Furfuryl alcohol is applied at the petrochemical and paint and varnish enterprises both as solvent, and as filming agent. It is used for nitrocellulose dissolution.
Furfuryl alcohol and furfural can be used together or separately for receiving hard resins on condensations with phenol and acetone, or with urea, other substances. Such pitches are used in production of fiber glass, some details of airplanes, and automobile brakes.
Furfuryl alcohol as one of derivatives of the furfural received in hydrolytic production is available substance owing to what it is widely used as mother compound for receiving different derivatives of furan.
