Argon is an element of the main subgroup of the eighth group, in the third period of the Periodic Table of Mendeleyev D. I. Argon is designated by symbolical reduction of "Ar" (from the Latin name "Argon"), has atomic number 18 and CAS number: 7440-37-1. As a part of the terrestrial atmosphere, the volume share of argon makes 0,93%.

Argon is applied in various industries and life. For example:

Metallurgical industry and construction. Argon is applied in heat treatment of the metals unstable to oxidation as the protective environment for cutting and welding of various metals and nonmetals.

Household use of argon. In life, argon is applied in lamps with an incandescence thread, in advertizing street and showcase boards, and also as filler from space in window double-glazed windows and in diving suits of underwater swimming.

Medicine. In surgery argon is applied as means of purification of air in operating rooms and also as means of processing of cuts (operations in time).

Food industry. Argon is the registered food additive of E938.

Fire safety. Argon is used in gas fire-prevention installations.
