Diethyl phthalate in chemical industry is received heating of ethyl alcohol with phthalic anhydride in the presence of small amounts of sulphuric acid as the catalyst. After acid removal by aqueous solution of hydroxides or carbonates of metals, mix is divided vacuum distillation into ethanol and diethyl phthalate.

Diethyl phthalate is applied as plastifikatorpolimer and the fixer of smell in perfumery. It is applied as denaturant additive to ethyl alcohol and alcohol - containing products.
