Description
STH naphthalene for hromatogr. (3 ml)
Naphthalene — C10H8 solid crystal matter with characteristic smell. In water it is not dissolved, but we will well dissolve in benzene, ether, alcohol, chloroform.
Naphthalene on chemical properties is similar to benzene: it is easily nitrated, sulphurized, interacts with halogens. Differs from benzene in what reacts even easier.
Naphthalene is received from coal tar. Also naphthalene can be emitted from heavy pitch of pyrolysis (quenching oil) which is applied in the course of pyrolysis on ethylenic installations.

In the nature naphthalene is emitted by termites of type of Coptotermes formosanus to protect the nests from muravyyov, fungi and nematodes.
Important raw materials of chemical industry: it is applied to synthesis of phthalic anhydride, tetralin, decalin, various derivatives of naphthalene.
Derivatives of naphthalene apply to receiving dyes and explosive substances, in medicine as insektitsidmol in life.
Large monocrystals are applied as scintillators to registration of ionizing radiation.
