His fame beat all records. It often happens - you read the books of some author and do not know anything about his biography. And when you find out, you are amazed - you need to write a separate novel about him! So it is with Edgar Rice Burroughs, best known as the "father" of Tarzan. It was this writer who came up with the story about a boy raised by monkeys. The story, by the way, is very long - the first novel in this series is widely popular, but in total Burroughs wrote twenty - six of them! The last book was already finished by his heirs with the consent of the author himself. And how did Burroughs come to fame as a writer? The path to get there was long. He wrote his first novel at the age of 35. By this time, he had a very stormy biography behind him. His father served in the northern army during the Civil War, and the boy dreamed of following in his footsteps and making a military career. He decided to enter not just anywhere, but at West Point, the main forge of the highest military personnel in the United States. My father had influential acquaintances who promised to make patronage. But it didn't work out. Burroughs failed. He nevertheless signed up for the army, served a year, then worked as a policeman for another year. And. . . went to the cowboys. "I liked the cowboy life, even though there weren't any showers in Idaho in those days. I used to go three weeks without taking off my boots and Stetson. " I had Mexican spurs trimmed with silver, with huge stars and a chime. As I stomped down the street, the spurs tinkled loudly and I could be heard from a block away. Oh, how proud I was! " - said the writer many years later. However, he still did not intend to graze cows all his life. You won't get riches on this, nor fame. So he decided to find a more profitable business. Thus began his wanderings. Let's just list who he managed to work in the following years: - sold typewriter paper - worked in a gold mine - was a railroad cop - got a job as a clerk in the shorthand department - went to traveling salesmen - I tried myself as an accountant At some point, he even dreamed of going to China and teaching horse riding there. Burroughs turned 35 in 1911. He was an accountant, but dreamed of something completely different from his current job. About adventures, about distant worlds. And then one day he takes a form and on the reverse side begins to write a fantastic story about a man who got to Mars. It was written surprisingly easily and quickly. Soon the manuscript was completed, and Burroughs sent it to the editors of the magazine "All Story", on the pages of which similar works were periodically published. He didn't really count on anything, but editor Thomas Newell Metcalf sensed that the reader would like it. He sent Burroughs a check for $400 and published the first part of the novel in the next issue. The headline read: "Under the Moons of Mars. " As it turned out, this was the beginning of a super - successful saga about John Carter and his Martian adventures. Readers simply bombarded the editorial office with letters, demanding continuation. Burroughs instantly became famous. Barely finished with one successful series of books (11 volumes), the new star of fantastic literature takes on the next cycle. And this cycle is about the adoption of monkeys, whose name is Tarzan. Fees flowed like a river. They especially grew when films began to be made based on Burroughs' books. The writer published three novels a year and quickly became a wealthy man. Interestingly, in memory of his cowboy years, he bought himself a ranch, where he settled with his family. He named this ranch - Tarzania.
